Ek Chidiya Nathuakhan

Location: Ek Chidiya tourist cottage – set amid terraced fields at village Nathuakhan, 40 km ahead of Nainital, in the Himalayas.

About: This is a place where the only race for a destination is between birds. At Ek Chidiya, you have all the time in the world – to live.

Accommodation: Ek Chidiya, spread over an acre of land, has a cottage comprising four bedrooms with attached modern bathrooms, and a common dining area. It is surrounded by orchards and fields on all sides. You won’t get to hear the television here, but you can occasionally hear a cow mooing at a distance, or a cricket crooning right outside your window. On local festive occasions, the faded sounds of the dholak come wafting from the village temple, which is located at a half-hour trek from the cottage. The ambience can slowly help you become a resting Kumaoni villager with us.

The cottage has been constructed in the traditional method – with a tin roof, mud-plastered walls and stone floors. Each room has an open sit-out area.

The common dining area is where buffet breakfast, lunch and dinner are served. A limited room service menu is also available for the in-between times.

Activity: The best thing to do here is to, yes, relax – not in front of the television though. From the comforts of your bed, you will find it hard to take your eyes off the mountains at a distance. Or else, you can curl up with the book you have been, for so long, trying to read in peace.

Kids’ activities: Climbing up the mountain terraces will keep them busy most of the time. For the other moments, there is an outdoor sandpit (we can provide sand castle-building sets), a swing on a tree, and indoor games.

Near by cottage:

Mukteshwar (18 km), Nainital (40 km), Bhimtal (50 km), the paragliding centre at Naukuchiatal (45 km), Almora (35 km), and Jageshwar (80 km).

How to get there:

Drive down: It is a 7-hour non-stop drive from New Delhi. You drive through Hapur bypass, Moradabad, Tanda, Bajpur, Kaladhungi, Nainital, Bhowali, and Ramgarh.

By bus: You can take one of the many private and government buses that ply to Nainital (about 45 km from Ek Chidiya) or Haldwani (about 60 km from Ek Chidiya).

By train: The nearest railway station is at Kathgodam, which is connected to Delhi by the direct overnight train, Ranikhet Express. Ek Chidiya is located about 60 km, or two-and-a-half hour drive, from Kathgodam.
