About:
Harsil, residing in the Gangotri valley, gets you to experience the Himalayas in all its glory — beautiful rivers, gushing streams, hot springs, waterfalls, forests, soaring peaks which seem to touch the heavens, green meadows, glaciers et al make this area a haven for those seeking high adrenalin doses. The drive to Harsil itself is a pleasure. The route, which follows the Bhagirathi River from Uttarkashi, is a sheer visual delight with sharp twists and turns. Sometimes the road ascends high above the valley, while at other times it drops right down to the river. The entire Bhagirathi Valley is amazingly green and at Harsil, the river suddenly opens out into a wide picture-perfect valley, cutting a broad path with white sandy beaches on both sides, surrounded by apple orchards, pine forests and beautiful snow-capped mountains. The Himalayan Eco Lodge sits at a comfortable distance from the hustle and buzz of the main town. From here you get to experience whatever you have heard of this serene place. Sitting in the lodge one has the towering peaks all around you and a flat expanse that leads to the Bhagirathi river. The place invites you to take long walks in the forests and along the river.
A stone's throw away from Harsil is one of the holiest temples in India, Gangotri. This is a place that takes you back to classic timelessness with the thundering Bhagirathi and thick forest all around and the spiritual vibe that emanates from the shrine. From here one can set off on a trek to the source of the holy Ganges at Gaumukh (cow's mouth) where the river is just a trickle compared to the wild flow as it flows ahead. For the adventurous, you could continue ahead to the meadows at Tapovan, which is a spectacular location at the base of the Shivling peak. There are many other treks available in this region depending on the length and grade that you decide upon.
